Standard Terms of Engagement

6. Our retainer

When you instruct us, we will send you a written engagement letter setting out the scope of our retainer, the identity of the solicitor with day-to-day responsibility for your matter, our fees and billing arrangements, and your right to cancel.

7. Fees and payment

Our fees are calculated on the basis set out in our engagement letter, typically by reference to hourly rates or fixed fees. VAT is charged at the prevailing rate (currently 20%). Invoices are payable within 14 days of the date of issue. We reserve the right to charge interest on late payments at 4% above the Bank of England base rate.

8. Cancellation rights

If you instruct us at a distance (including online or by telephone), you have the right to cancel your instructions within 14 days without giving a reason. If you wish us to start work before the cancellation period expires, we will ask for your express consent and you will be liable for any work carried out prior to cancellation.

9. Confidentiality

All communications between you and us are confidential and subject to legal professional privilege, unless disclosure is required by law or our regulatory obligations.

10. Governing law

These terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes arising from these terms shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.

These terms were last updated in March 2026. If you have any questions, please contact us at enquiries@hagonhogg.co.uk.
